What makes Collins' story particularly compelling is the subtle nature of his drinking. He clarifies, "I was never ‘falling over’ drunk. It was just drinking ‘normally,’ as one would drink water. I’d wake up, have a glass of wine. Watch TV, read a book, have a glass of wine... Some people’s insides can’t take it. Mine broke down."
The consequences of his excessive drinking were severe. Collins revealed that his kidneys and liver were failing, and he was close to death. He was hospitalized for organ failure and spent most of his time unconscious. His family even considered taking him off life support, but miraculously, he recovered and found sobriety.
However, Collins' health struggles didn't end with his sobriety. He has had to deal with other physical ailments, including five knee operations and drop foot, a condition causing nerve damage that affects his ability to walk. He now uses crutches to assist him.
Despite these challenges, Collins is feeling better than he has in years. He attributes his improved physical health to his commitment to sobriety and regular physiotherapy. "Physically, now, I reckon I’m A1, 100%. I’ve worked at it. Haven’t drunk for three years. I do physio three times a week, to bring me up to speed. All is good!"
Looking ahead, Collins is optimistic about his future. He mentions that he has some unfinished musical projects and suggests that new music could be on the horizon. This is exciting news for fans, especially considering his last release was a covers album in 2010.
In November, Collins will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the second time, this time as a solo artist. He previously entered the institution as a member of Genesis in 2010. To celebrate the 45th anniversary of his debut solo album, 'Face Value,' a new box set titled 'Face Value (Full Value)' will be released in September.
