In the world of sports, where data analytics reigns supreme, it's easy to get lost in the numbers and forget the bigger picture. As an educator, I find myself reflecting on the recent debate surrounding Jaylen Brown and the Celtics, and the limits of data-driven decision-making. While the advanced statistics presented in the Boston Globe essay were fascinating, I couldn't help but wonder if we're measuring the wrong things. The author's analysis, while impressive, missed a crucial aspect: the impact on the community. Professional sports franchises exist in cities, and they depend on the support of local communities. The value of a franchise player goes beyond the court, and it's essential to consider the broader implications of their actions. Jaylen Brown, for instance, has used his platform to invest in STEM education, entrepreneurship, and efforts to close Boston's racial wealth gap. These initiatives have a profound impact on the community, and they're difficult to quantify with numbers alone. The NBA's second apron has raised the costs of keeping expensive rosters together, and franchises are increasingly owned by private equity firms. This shift towards data-driven decision-making has led to a focus on quantifiable metrics, but it has also caused certain forms of value to disappear. The experience of a middle school student spending a week on MIT's campus, for instance, can't be captured by an algorithm. Similarly, the impact of Bill Russell on the school desegregation movement in Boston couldn't have been measured by adjusted plus-minus. As educators, we know that the things that matter most are often the hardest to measure. We don't reject data, but we're not captive to it either. In the case of Jaylen Brown, the Celtics may ultimately prove that trading him was the right basketball decision. However, I hope we don't fool ourselves into believing that the only value worth pursuing is that which we can most easily measure. The two photographs on my office wall, of Bill Russell and Jaylen Brown, remind me that greatness isn't measured only by what happens between the lines. It's the impact on the community that truly matters. As Jaylen Brown moves on to the Sixers, I hope that his legacy will continue to inspire young people, and that the NBA will recognize the value of community engagement. After all, some things are bigger than the game.
